Free Stuff
Free Stuff.
To the ears of a die-hard garage saler in a country where they are few and far between, those words sound fabulous!
Those who know me can attest to my love of garage/yard/bargain hunting. I do love to get something we need or can use for a great price, free is even better.
We do have garage sales here in Thailand, mostly hosted by other ex-pat families who are moving back to their home country or have been here long enough to accumulate enough stuff to warrant such a sale.
Although I jump at the chance to attend such events, (hey - it is one of the few places to find clothes to fit my un-Thai sized body), I have yet to find anything at those sales for prices comparable to a good US yard sale.
Sharon, at Rocks in My Dryer is hosting a giveaway bonanza this week. And free, just the cost of leaving a comment, and you could get some wonderful stuff. It sounded interesting and so I took the opportunity to head to the night market and found a couple of fun things to give away myself.
I am hoping that at least a couple of the other giveaways will be open to those of us who do not live in the US.
Item #1
A Thai silk scarf/table runner.
This is a silk piece measuring 10 inches/ 25.5 cm wide and 75 inches/190cm long, including the fringe.
It is black and gold with the color pattern reversed on the opposite side. There is no ‘wrong’ side.
Here is the full length view. Lovely, isn’t it?
Item #2
Thai hilltribes quilted zipper bag. (I believe this is the Lisu style, from Northern Thailand)
All the work is done by hand. It measures 6.5 inches/16.5 cm wide and 4 inches/10cm tall. It does have a flat bottom and a zipper top. This a very common style of handicraft, which surprised me when I first came. I did not think of quilting when I thought of Thai style handicraft, but this is traditional for this people group.
To enter, leave a comment, or a question for us about Thailand or why we are here.
This is open to anyone with any kind of address. ![]()
Winners will be chosen over the weekend of Feb 1-3 and a winner posted on Monday.
There will be two winners, one for the scarf and one for the bag.
Now go check out some of the other offerings at Bloggy
Giveways.
NOTE: COMMENTS ARE NOW CLOSED, WE ARE DRAWING THE WINNER!

I would love to win your giveaway. I have started collecting fabrics from around the world as part of a project with my nieces, and we don’t have anything from Thailand. I don’t want to buy something here, I want to get something that is authentic. Thank you for such a thoughtful giveaway!

I love the quilting and the scarf. YEARS ago a friend in Thailand sent me a quilted insert. I still have it in my sewing box. Don’t know what to do with it.

The scarf is so pretty. We have decorated our livingroom with things from different counties with the focus being on New Tribes and Missions. This scarf would look great. I have a question… do they play football in Thailand?

Thai stuff! Cool! I like them both…not sure what to choose! Let me think about it.
January 29th, 2008 at 7:33 am
I would LOVE to win those. I’ve been enthralled with Thai textiles ever since I vacationed there 8 years ago. We’ve got several that we use as tablecloths, and I had one traditional skirt (the kind with the stripe down one side) made into covers for throw pillows for my couch.
January 29th, 2008 at 7:54 am
Wow! Great giveaway! I loved the scarf and was sure you couldn’t beat it but the bag is just as great! So, why are you in Thailand?
January 29th, 2008 at 7:54 am
I would love to win that scarf. Of course I would love the bag to because it is really cute. But that scarf is just so beautiful!
January 29th, 2008 at 11:59 am
Wow, both of those items are very beautiful! Thailand - it seems I’ve heard in the past that is a difficult country to live in if you are a foreigner - I’m very curious to find out why you are there, how long you’ve been there!
January 29th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
I was in Thailand this past summer for three months and loved the markets where stuff like this was sold! They are so cute:o).
January 29th, 2008 at 1:06 pm

Also, I don’t have a specific question but I’d be interested in learning more about Thai food (do you have a favourite?).
January 29th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
I’d love to win the scarf. What’s your favorite Thai dish to eat? What’s the one you don’t like?

January 29th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
The scarf is amazing! You must of crafted that by hand. This is such a nice giveaway.
January 29th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
Scarf or purse, they are both too lovely!
My husband, decades ago when he was freewheeling, traveled in Thailand several times and always speaks of how beautiful it was. And as an avid needleworker myself, I really appreciate the time and skill that goes into the traditional asian handcrafts. I love all their embroidery, quilting and scenic work. Fabulous!
January 29th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
Others have already asked why you are in Thailand, so I won’t ask that. I would like to know what you find most intriguing about Thailand as well as what you consider the most difficult?
Thanks for the giveaway!
Stop by my place to win a bath set & candles or one of two copies of a book I’m giving away.

January 29th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Beautiful things to be giving away! Oh, I’d love the chance to get either one
I have a question…is the Thai food we get in restaurants here in the states anything at all like REAL Thai cuisine? I’ve always wondered how much of it has been “Americanized”.
January 30th, 2008 at 12:33 am
Many of the same questions are being asked, so it may be better to just answer you all here.

We are in Thailand as missionaries with NTM, a mission that focuses on planting churches in rural areas. This is the begining of our second year in Chiang Mai, and we are still learning the national language. At the end of two years, we will be heading out to a village to join an exisiting team.
We have so many favorites when it comes to food! This is certaintly a great place to work in that aspect.
I did find that our American/western stereotype of Thai food was very skewed toward the peanut sauce flavor. I have really only found a couple of foods that use peanut sauce, the obvious one being chicken satay of course, and one other, a main dish salad made from the shredded flower of a the banana plant. And yes, it is delicious.
One of the other main differences between how we eat Thai food and the Thai do, is we are much more picky about what goes into a soup or curry or on top of our rice. We quickly learned how to say ‘meat only please!’, not finding the various unidentified body parts very appetizing.
And of course the food is spicy, much more than in an Thai restaurant in the states will generally serve. But we have certainly adjusted to that, and find ourselves adding chili sauce to the western dishes I make now.
As the Thai say, if it is not spicy, it is not delicious!
January 30th, 2008 at 12:43 am
Laura Williams, thank you for asking what is most difficult about living in Thailand. Well, that can vary day by day of course, but in general, it is the language barrier and being able to be identified as a non -Thai on sight. I have a new found compassion for anyone who struggles with illiteracy, as I have just begun to become literate in Thai. I hated not being able to read the signs and depend on the ones that had some English one them. Here in Chiang Mai, many signs do have English too, but not so much outside the larger cities. It is also difficult not being able to casually chat with people I meet too. Even though we have been studying language for a year now, my speaking is still very deliberate and halting, and if someone responds in a way I have not heard before, or with a new word, I get thrown off. We are excited though to see daily improvement in that area, and the ability to explain much more cleary why we are here and what Good News we have to share with them.

Wow..I’m so excited to find your blog. I was born and raised in Thailand. My husband (American) and I would like to serve as full-time missionaries in Thailand someday if it’s the Lord’s will.
My question for you is: are there currently many native missionaries in Thailand? Are Thai christians being encouraged/supported to share the Gospel with their own people?
Thank you for your heart for mission/evangelism and your desire for people in Thailand to be saved!!! We will be praying for you.
January 30th, 2008 at 1:32 am
Love Thai food. Can I pray for you?

Those are gorgeous items you have chosen for your giveaway … I love that scarf ! My question would be what is the weather like there today? Thank you!
January 30th, 2008 at 8:07 am
The silk scarf is beautiful! As an expat myself (but in Europe, so much less culture shock I’m sure), I’m curious: Is it possible to integrate into Thai culture as a foreigner? Or do most expats stay within the expat community?
January 30th, 2008 at 8:22 am
I love the scarf! My boyfriend is studying Eastern Religions and it would be prefect for his office. I love the little bag, it would be perfect for all my tiny knitting needles. Great giveaway and wonderful blog.
January 30th, 2008 at 9:22 am
Gillian,
A good question! I am sure there is a website around, and I know just the person to ask. One of the parents at our kid’s school. I will see what I can find out and put the info on a future blog. Incentive to check back, right?
Mimi, how lucky you are to have a cooking teacher. Many of the dishes use the same ingredients in different ways, so once you learn what they are how the tastes mingle, you can make all sorts of things. Keep learning!
Marilyn, are you sure you want to know the weather? We are nearing the end of cold season, it was in the 80’s today, with a bit of breeze to keep us comfortable. We got really cold in December, down all the way to the 60’s! But don’t be too jealous for our warm weather, for hot season, it is a comin’!
January 30th, 2008 at 9:44 am

Those are so beautiful! I love Thai textiles, they’re wonderful.
So what brought you to Thailand?
January 30th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
Hi…….these things would fit perfectly with all of our other “things” we have gotten from around the world from various missionaries. (they have been great teaching aids for our homeschool) Some from mssion fundraisers, (cool handmade things from Africa and Turmenistan) some from The India Childrens Choir (they made us part of their tribe by bestowing on us one of their tribal shawls(?) ), from Sri Lanka where my sister in law went on a medical mission trip after the tsunami, and from China where same sister in law visited from their mission station in Taiwan. Now we need to go on our own mission trip.
January 30th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
How lovely! best of luck to all, and I hope this brings you many new readrs!

A Thai silk scarf/table runner extremely lovely. Hope to win
January 31st, 2008 at 2:58 pm
My dad’s friend lived in Thailand six months of the year. He has nothing bad to say about the country. That scarf is beautiful.
January 31st, 2008 at 3:24 pm

OH MY! That table runner is absolutely STUNNING! It would make me feel very priviledged to win it and display it! Thank you so much for entering me!
January 31st, 2008 at 6:02 pm
Oh please enter me in your contest… As I have never read your blog, my questions for you could be endless. Why are you in Thailand? How long have you been there? Is this a permanent stay, or a deployment of sorts? What is your favorite part of living there? And your least favorite? My family lived for awhile in France and there were definitely parts that were good and parts not so good… I guess that is how it is any time you are not living “at home.”
January 31st, 2008 at 6:08 pm
Beautiful! Count me in!
January 31st, 2008 at 6:33 pm
Both are lovely. I’d like to have them and then teach my daughter something about Thailand (and myself, lol). Of course, she’s 5 months old. But I can start planning training now!
Thanks for the neat giveaway and the chance to win.
January 31st, 2008 at 6:44 pm
OOH, that runner is stunning. I think I’d actually use it as a piano scarf across the piano instead as a runner on the dining table. The dining table just isn’t safe. Not at this stage of toddlerhood. It’s just not.
January 31st, 2008 at 7:30 pm
I would love this!
January 31st, 2008 at 7:33 pm
Too, too cool! I loved looking around your blog. Thank you for your great offer!
January 31st, 2008 at 8:09 pm
These are gorgeous!
January 31st, 2008 at 8:26 pm
Ooooh, wow! I love anything from Thailand. I went there with the hubby for our honeymoon and just fell in love. I so much want to go back when my kids are old enough to appreciate it.
I got a bag from one of the hilltribes and added a zipper and use that as a purse but it is getting so raggedy. I wish I had bought two. Or three. And I love decorating my home with “global” type items. That table runner is so lovely. I heart dark green.
Thanks for such a great giveaway. I am SO keeping my fingers crossed!
January 31st, 2008 at 8:52 pm
Beautiful things! A friend was an expat in Thailand too and shopped til she dropped for 3 years. What beach do you recommend? I am hankering to try one.
January 31st, 2008 at 8:54 pm
The silk scarf is nice! My blog is open to internationals. Please enter!!!
January 31st, 2008 at 9:07 pm
I love that little bag! And the scarf is truly beautiful. I currently live in Ukraine and thought to offer something unique from here — but thought about it a bit too late. NEXT TIME!
January 31st, 2008 at 9:20 pm
Beautiful! I’ve always wondered - what’s actually in real Thai green curry? I like our local restaurant’s version of it, but I have no idea how authentic it is.
January 31st, 2008 at 9:26 pm
Wow, both are so nice!!!
As for a question about Thailand…What is the diet like there? I’ve had “Thai food” here in the US, but I am sure that it isn’t much like the day to day food there. What are the most common meals or types of meals eaten there?
Thanks!
January 31st, 2008 at 9:54 pm
We have a family at church that moved here from Thailand and another church family went there on a mission trip a few years ago. I love the scarf and the pouch is very nice too! Thanks for giving them away:)
January 31st, 2008 at 10:00 pm
Can I ask you a weird question? Do you know anything about adoption in Thailand? Do you know if they allow Americans to adopt? I would love more info if you know anything about it. About the giveaway, the items are lovely. Thank you for you having such a generous giveaway! I would LOVE to win either or both items!
(Please email me if I win!)
Thanks again!
January 31st, 2008 at 10:18 pm
These are gorgeous, and I would love to know why you are currently living in Thailand and is it permanent or just a temporary stay? Where are you originally from? And, how did the “natives” receive you? Was it a warm welcome and you feel at home there?…sorry for ALL the questions, I am just curious about what takes people on journeys around the world. Thanks:-)
January 31st, 2008 at 10:30 pm

Very pretty! My husband visited Thailand on work once. Why are you there? And are you as horrified driving as he was as a passenger in some of the cities there?
January 31st, 2008 at 11:36 pm
My husband spent a few years in Thailand as a boy. His parents worked for the Peace Corp. Why are you there.
